Alien Resurrection is a science fiction first person shooter game released in 2000, three years after the movie of the same name in 1997. The game was developed by Argonaut, the studio that created Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, which coincidentally was also published by Fox Interactive, the video game department of 20th Century Fox. Officially, the game is a PlayStation exclusive. Unofficially, there was also a PC port of the game, but was never released. There was also planned to be a DreamCast port of the game, but that got scrapped.

Gameplay[]

The game is a first person shooter, but is not a simple game of shooting up the enemies and making it to the end. There are 10 levels in the game, and most of them take a long time to play, but the player can save progress throughout the levels. The player has to complete objectives such as destroying the experiment clones, ejecting overheated escape pods, and often looking for keycards to open doors. The game is pretty much a first person shooter Tomb Raider game.

Characters[]

The player plays as several different characters, mainly playing as Ripley for most of the levels. Call, which is only playable in level 2 has a laser rifle, and Christie dual wields twin pistols, which he rapidly fires, which is quite effective.

Weapons[]

  • Pistol - A weapon with unlimited ammunition, though is only effective for opening most crates and combatting facehuggers.
  • Shotgun - A powerful weapon that fires more rapidly than shotguns in other shooter games. One clip consists of 4 rounds. The weapon is effective for combatting xenomorphs and opening heat sealed crates.
  • Pulse Rifle - A rapid firing weapon that is very powerful. The weapon is effective for combatting xenomorphs, marines, and heat sealed crates.
  • Flamethrower - A weapon that blasts fire. This weapon is effective for busting open crates and wasting facehuggers.
  • Electricity Gun - A weapon that is not found until level 9, a weapon that can electricute xenomorphs and facehuggers.

Health[]

The player can find and collect health kits, which the player may manually use when the player feels like it.

  • Small Health Pack - Restores health by 25%
  • Medium Health Pack - Restores health by 50%
  • Large Health Pack - Restores health by 100%

Autodoc[]

Autodocs are used to remove an alien from the player should a facehugger attack.

Controls[]

The game is compatiable with dualshock analog, and on analog mode includes the left analog stick to move, the right stick to look, and the R1 button to fire, like many first person shooter games that would come after it.

The controls in digital mode are the standard controls for older fps games on PlayStation, including the X button to fire, the triggers to strafe, and combinations of buttons for other functions.

Enemies[]

Throughout the game, the player encounters many opponents as listed below.

  • Xenomorph - the common enemy of the game.
  • Marines - security people that battle the aliens and the player alike.
  • Facehuggers - just other aliens is all.

Bosses[]

  • General Perez - the leader of the marines, a boss in level 6.
  • Alien Queen - the queen of the aliens, a boss in level 4.
  • Newborn - A hybrid human-xeno, a boss in levels 9 and 10.

My thoughts on the game[]

I think it is a really good game. It is one of the best first person shooter games I have ever played.

It was either this or Delta Force: Black Hawk Down that was my first fps game.

Also, I have a nostalgic soft spot for this game as I have grown up with it and played it for a long time. I used to play this game literally every day. But I don't play it as much anymore because I have a lot of other games to play.

I give this game a 10/10.
